Lute tab end

Since Thomas is going to debut the Baroque Lute soon, these are some photos from the trip to Saskatoon to get it. He made the first trip on the Easter long weekend with the Renaissance lute to allow Weldon to hear and measure it for string spacing and action. The lute was built over the summer with frequent teasing photos of its progress. These have been saved and may show up later.

On November 1, 2008, Thomas rose at some wee hour to get to Saskatoon to meet Weldon Gray at about 9 am since that is when it worked best for Weldon and if not that day it would have to wait a few more weeks. Waiting was not an option. After playing the instrument and paying some money, he returned to Edmonton the same day but after sunset.

The first sighting of the case which was also built by Weldon for just this lute.

Weldon and Thomas discuss the string action.

Thomas reading lute tab and playing the first time. Thomas already owned a student quality Baroque lute on which he had learned some of the basic techniques and repertoire. His skills at sight reading are in play here although if he hit a wrong note, it would still sound good to him in this context.

Later Thomas was given a tour of the workshop which looks like a simple garage on a simple street in Saskatoon. Here he is holding a stave jig which was used to shape the bowl of his new lute.

Leaving Saskatchewan with both lutes. You can see how much this fills up a station wagon and you can see the road behind the car.

Home again with instant claim on the case by one of the cats.
