Born in rural Alberta, Tom grew up playing guitar from age 12. Since then, he has lived in Toronto, Calgary and now Edmonton. In Toronto, he performed with various touring rock bands doing mostly covers. His musical influences include the great acoustic guitar players and the progressive rock bands. His album collection includes Andreas Segovia, Julian Bream and John Renbourn as well as Yes, Jethro Tull, and Deep Purple with Ritchie Blackmore.
In the 1990's, Tom began to explore playing early music and bought his first lute. He learned volumes of work from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. He has been mostly self-taught on guitar but has had a few lessons for lute. The years doing improvisation in complex rock and a solid foundation in theory have come forward to enhance his playing now.
Thomas reads from standard notation for guitar but French tablature for the lute. Where possible, he will play a song on the correct instrument for its period and style. As sample of Baroque lute tablature is given below.
You can hear Thomas locally at various public venues and with other collaborating artists. He also maintains an active and full teaching schedule for all styles of guitar.
